Searching for a Clear Line Break

Repost of an article from another of my blogs to test this theme.

I’m Frustrated.

I’m trying to post my photos with brief descriptions but the layout is hideous!

I’m a total WordPress newbie (second-day user) but have a pretty good handle of HTML (check out my Sunshine HTML Resource) and am willing to try anything I can come up with.

An Example

Football

Short descriptive text about football.

Prom

Short descriptive text about prom.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

I would have liked the second image to have moved down to a clear margin.

In HTML you could put in a BR CLEAR="all" tag.

It works here, the first time, but breaks as soon as you edit the post.  The same thing happens if you hit ENTER a lot or put in a bunch of P tags.

So, what else can we try?
—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Long Text

TRY A LONG TEXT LINE:
———————————————-
long enough?
—————————————————————————-
long enough?
—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
too long?
—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Long text string:  Works in Visual Editor (if long enough) and when Published (but may break).

But is inelegant and may break in some themes:

  • If the text string is too short, it may actually fit and not clear the margin.
  • If the text string is too long, it may extend off the edge unprofessionally.
  • If the text string is too long, it may break across two lines and not clear the margin.

Plus, there’s no fix because it is totally dependent on the viewer’s browser text size settings.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Horizontal Rule

TRY A HORIZONTAL RULE:

HR:  Doesn’t work in Visual Editor or when Published.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Empty Header

TRY EMPTY HEADER TAGS:

Empty H6 tags: Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Empty H1 tags: Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Layout may be very confusing when editing published posts.

May also confuse search engines.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Header w/ HR

TRY HEADER TAGS ENCLOSING ONLY A HORIZONTAL RULE:

H6 tags w/only HR:  Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

H1 tags w/only HR:  Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

BREAKS UPON EDITING:
Header tags disappear, even if you just switch between Visual and HTML Editors.
You have to remember to fix it each time and must always publish from the HTML Editor.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Header w/ Text

TRY HEADER TAGS CONTAINING ONLY TEXT:

Header 6 Text

H6 tags w/only text:   Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Header 1 Text

H1 tags w/only text:   Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Layout may be very confusing when editing published posts.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Header w/ HR and Text

TRY HEADER TAGS CONTAINING HR AND TEXT:
[useful for a new section, since HR doesn’t work by itself]

Header 6 w/ HR and Text

H6 tags w/ HR and text: Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Header 1 w/ HR and Text

H1 tags w/ HR and text: Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

BREAKS UPON EDITING:
Header tags disappear, even if you just switch between Visual and HTML Editors.
You have to remember to fix it each time and must always publish from the HTML Editor.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Clear Pixel

TRY A CLEAR PIXEL IMAGE:

Clear Pixel, AlignNone:  Doesn’t work in Visual Editor or when Published.

Clear Pixel, AlignCenter:  Doesn’t work in Visual Editor BUT does work when Published.

Layout may be very confusing when editing published posts.

Be sure to delete any automatically inserted caption or link codes.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

I’m really stubborn, can you tell?

I know what I want it to do and I’m determined to find a way to get my desired result.

For now, I think I’m going to use empty header tags or header tags with text.

For section changes, I’ll use both with a horizontal rule between them.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Does anyone have other ideas to try?

Have you found something that reliably works?
